Last Bjarne pipe
A new pipe is always a thing of joy.
I must admit though that yesterday I was going through some mixed emotions buying one.
I started out on Wednesday when I walked into Brobergs - just looking - while i was waiting for my family. The guy behind the desk greeted me with "I've just the pipe for you" and waved towards the wall cupboard as he kept selling stuff to some of the other guys. I walked up and almost immediately knew which one he meant. A smallish freehand of a certain kind - I think the shape is sometimes referred to as a Whale(?) which had a really nice grain, shape and tint.
I still looked at it as my family came to pick me up. "You're right" I called back leaving the store, "it IS beautiful!". "Yeah, I knew you got good taste!" was the answer from behind the counter.
Yesterday lunch I came back to the B&M with a friend who bought some cigars, and had to check out the pipe again. "No" I told myself, "you've promised yourself not to..." as another clerk asked me "A new pipe today maybe?". I smiled and shrugged turning my pockets inside out to indicate my current financial situation after I moved into a new place.
I went back to the office and worked away the whole afternoon til I got a break in the evening, when I surfed to SF, only to be greated by the sad news that Bjarne Nielsen had passed away!
I stood right up, went down to the B&M, picked up my credit card and bought the Bjarne I had been admiring for the last two days. I also bought a 100g tin of Bjarne's The special one Flake.
After a late evening meeting I went home, kissed the daughter goodnight and sat out on the late winter balcony to stuff the pipe with the tobacco. I raised it to Bjarne and smoked in silence. What a pipe. What a baccy. What a shame.
